Overview

If you have time

Kauslunde Church is a historic village church on Funen, a short detour from the Margueritruten. Parts of the original Romanesque building from around 1200 are still visible, including sections of the choir’s north wall. The church is constructed mainly from field stones set on a base of dressed stone. In the 1400s it was rebuilt in Gothic style, giving the building a layered appearance. On the choir’s south wall, a vertical marker between the two windows clearly shows where the choir was extended at a later stage.

Stop at Kauslunde Church if you are interested in church architecture and can spare a short detour from the route. The church shows a clear mix of Romanesque and later Gothic building phases, visible in the stonework and the extended choir. It works well as a brief, focused visit rather than a long stay.

Worth a short stop if you enjoy older village churches and visible building phases.

Frequently asked

What can I see at Kauslunde Church from the outside?
From the outside you can see parts of the original Romanesque church, including preserved sections of the choir’s north wall, built in field stones on a base of hewn stone. You can also make out later Gothic alterations and a visible vertical marker on the south wall between the choir windows, indicating where the choir was extended.
How much time should I plan for a visit to Kauslunde Church?
Kauslunde Church is best treated as a brief stop on your drive. Many visitors will find that 15–30 minutes is enough to walk around the building, look at the fieldstone construction and base of hewn stone, and notice the Gothic rebuilding and the marker showing the extended choir on the south wall.
Is Kauslunde Church far from the Margueritruten driving route?
Kauslunde Church lies a short distance from the signed Margueritruten, so it works as a quick diversion rather than a major detour. You can leave the main route, visit the church to see the Romanesque walls and later Gothic rebuilding, and return to the drive without adding a long extra leg to your day.
Why is Kauslunde Church interesting for architecture lovers?
Architecture-minded visitors can clearly see different building phases at Kauslunde Church. Some Romanesque walls from around 1200 remain, notably in the choir’s north side, built from field stones on a dressed stone base. Later Gothic rebuilding in the 1400s, plus the visible vertical marker between the choir windows on the south wall, shows where the choir was extended.
Can I combine Kauslunde Church with other nearby stops on Funen?
Kauslunde Church can be combined with other nearby churches such as Gamborg Church or Vejlby Church to create a short loop of village churches off the main Margueritruten section. This works well if you are interested in comparing different church buildings while still keeping driving distances fairly short.
